How To Paint A Seascape

About this tutorial

Difficulty: Intermediate
Panel Size: 13 x 13

This dramatic beach scene with its moody sky and sunlit foreground has everything needed to make it a very attractive painting, without the need for a great variety of content. The smoothness of elements within the majority of the painting make this an ideal project for the beginner and intermediate artist, with the long beach grasses adding the contrast between softness and detail. The simple composition draws you in to the landscape as your eye follows the waterline to the horizon. In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a photo realistic painting which will include how I blend colours in order to get a smooth transition of hue and tone and how I get the sharpness of brush strokes needed for the grass. The techniques learned in this tutorial will give you a firm foundation for more complex subjects.
