How do you add layers to oil paintings?

I add layers to oil paintings by using a glaze of paint thinned with Liquin, and then applying a second layer that is not thinned paint. I use white spirit to thin my paint when it is necessary to have paint stick on the top of previously painted and still wet layers. For instance, the many layers of blades of reeds, tree foliage, or a grass field.
