Do you need to use mediums when oil painting?

It is not necessary to use any medium with oil paint. I use mediums when the paint appears a bit stiff and does not apply easily. I use Liquin for glazes and I use white spirits to thin the paint for colours that are laid on top of wet paint, in addition to painting sharper edges in the foreground detail.
